Training simulation of an ORLAN-D space suit for extravehicular manoeuvres in open space
The ORLAN-D suit was first used on the Russian space station SALYUT-6 in 1977.
The suit is fitted with a fold-out life-support system that provided thermal regulation and breathing air. All vital components are duplicated. Power supply, communications and telemetry were provided via a cable approximately 20 metres long. The plastic helmet has a double anti-fog structure and is fitted with a gold-coated, hinged sun visor. The suit’s outer white protective cover can be individually adjusted to the cosmonaut’s size using Velcro fasteners. Underneath the ORLAN-D space suit, the astronaut wears a corresponding inner suit with water cooling.
