International Exchange for Museum Professionals

In this workshop session a man and a child are conducting an experiment together using a smartphone and everyday materials. They are sitting at a table, focused intently on the smartphone display, while a facilitator leans over to provide guidance. A variety of common items, such as string, aluminium foil and rubber bands, are spread across the table alongside a container of tools. In the background, other participants can be seen at their workstations, deeply engaged in their own experiments. Photo: Deutsches Museum | Croucher Foundation

A visitor stands alongside another guest in the "Modern Aviation" exhibition, holding a circular paper plane. She has her arm raised, poised to launch the paper plane. In the background, a helicopter is on display, providing a thematic backdrop to the experiment. Photo: Deutsches Museum | Deutsches Museum, München
Job Shadowing at the Deutsches Museum
Job shadowing offers a valuable opportunity to rethink the museum world together. We highly value the vibrant exchange with international colleagues and are pleased to offer museum professionals insights into our daily work—preferably within the framework of Erasmus+ projects. These visits provide a chance to learn from one another, compare organisational structures, and gain new inspiration for exhibitions and programming.
Our job shadowing program focuses on the fields of Education and Outreach as well as Exhibitions. We are happy to share practical experience in museum work and are equally interested in your ideas and suggestions.
Insights into our work may include:
- Guided tours of our exhibitions.
- Presentations of current education and outreach programs.
- Insights into the curatorial practice of selected exhibitions.
- A look behind the scenes of museum operations.
- Professional exchange with our staff members.
Please note: If you are interested in other departments of the museum, please contact the respective departments directly.

A staff member stands in the auditorium of the Deutsches Museum, a vast space with tiered seating filled with a large audience. People are crowded along the railings and at the back of the hall, watching attentively as a staff member presents a science show. The presenter, dressed in a red top, is addressing the crowd. Bright natural light streams into the room through large windows. Photo: Deutsches Museum | Deutsches Museum, München

The image depicts an interactive science show demonstrating the properties of light waves. A presenter stands at the front of the stage, using a rope to illustrate wave motion. At the opposite end, an assistant holds the rope tight, allowing the movement to create a visible wave pattern that symbolises the behaviour of light. On a table, various materials are laid out to be used for other experiments throughout the science show. Photo: Deutsches Museum | Croucher Foundation
Professional Exchange: Dates and Terms
To ensure high-quality preparation and to manage our internal capacities effectively, we offer job shadowing during the following periods:

- September 14 – 18, 2026

Please plan your visit within one of these specific weeks and indicate your preferred date in your initial inquiry.

The image depicts a spacious exhibition dedicated to bridge and hydraulic engineering. Numerous visitors are moving between various models, experiment stations, and information displays. Prominent features include large steel cables and constructions that illustrate the typical elements of modern bridges. An elevated pedestrian bridge with a railing spans the exhibition, offering visitors a unique vantage point to look down at additional models and exhibits below.
