Vehicle and machine restoration
The transparent workshop in the transport centre
Historic vehicles and machines give the Deutsches Museum its unmistakable character. The museum has its own specialists for their preservation and restoration.
The workshop has now moved to the Verkehrszentrum to carry out its work behind glass walls for visitors to see. A look inside the workshop reveals the wide range of machinery, which, in addition to a deep understanding of technology in general, is crucial to the success of a restoration project.
The older an object is, the less likely it is to be accompanied by technical documentation. For this reason, from the start of a restoration project, everything is documented in detail in words and pictures and the information gained during the work is recorded and prepared for museum visitors. The restoration of large objects also involves dealing with a diverse mix of materials. Knowledge of metal craftsmanship in all its forms must not only be available in its current status, but also in its historical development.
