From Congress Hall to Forum of the Future
The eventful history of the building at the Ludwig Bridge.
Sample space in a prime downtown location: The Forum building on Ludwigsbrücke has a turbulent past, is currently being given a new lease of life, and is heading for a modern future in and for dialog with society. A brief overview of the building’s history and prospects:
- 1928 Laying of the foundation stone
- 1932 Completion of shell
- 1935 Opening of the hall building for congresses, scientific lectures (with experimental demonstrations), concerts, banquets and festivities.
- 1944/45 heavy damage by incendiary and demolition bombs during the Second World War
- 1945 First use from December by the U.S. military government under the name “Jubilee Hall” (sports and variety events)
- 1946 January: Reopening. The income from the rental should help finance the reconstruction of the entire museum.
- 1955 The forum is fully restored. In the following decades it is used as a venue for concerts (from classical to rock and pop), congresses, fashion shows and festivals.
- 1989 Decision to privatize and transform the building into the “Forum of Technology” (with planetarium and Imax cinema)
- 1992 November: Opening of the “Forum of Technology”
- 2001 Renaming to ”Amazeum“
- 2003 Renaming to ”Forum am Deutschen Museum“
- 2005 End of the Imax era. In the fall, opening of Munich‘s first digital cinema (from 2007 also with 3D technology)
- 2010 Cessation of cinema operations due to unprofitability, closure of the event areas
July: Repurchase of the building by the Deutsches Museum - 2015 December: Cabinet decision for a new concert hall in the factory district
- 2016 Preparation of an interim use
- 2017 March 4: Opening of the event space with the Munich Creative Business Week.
End of April: Opening of the new gastronomy areas (Blitz Restaurant and Club) - 2018 Opening of the ”TUMLab Forum“
- 2022 Opening of the “Forum of the Future”: an open experiential, creative and discussion room for knowledge transfer and technological social dialog; regular events, exhibitions, actions are planned
- 2025 OIpening of the Future Box

- Experience Center (700 square meters).

- Streaming Dome in the former planetarium for up to 300 people
- Former Imax cinema with up to 330 seats
- TUMLab Forum (about 150 square meters)
- TUM AI.Factory (30 office workstations)
