The media lab at the Deutsches Museum designs and realises exhibition elements with digital media. When many people think of digital media, they think of films or applications running on screens - and indeed, you can see a lot of monitors in our workspaces. Visitors to the exhibitions will also find these typical screens with in-depth information or to support accessibility.

Of course, we can also programme and implement these typical film or information stations with touchscreens - but we can take care of the special solutions. We also see far more potential in this, as visitors can only experience these media exhibits in the Deutsches Museum.

For example, when an object is brought to life through media: The skilful interplay of light, sound, projections or reflections with the real object can create an almost magical effect. You can't see exactly how it is made, but something new and special is created. With the support of the extensive expertise in the workshops of the Deutsches Museum, something unique is possible.

It is very important that the media support and that they do not replace: We don't want to create a parallel, virtual world that competes with the real part of the museum. Instead, the media should complement the real part - make it more interesting, more fascinating, more vivid and, last but not least, easier to experience. In our eyes, the potential of digital media is utilised far too rarely.

The aim is always to offer the person standing in front of the station in our Deutsches Museum added value in terms of understanding and experience.

Workshop insights: The media binoculars

The 23 in-house specialist workshops are of outstanding importance to the Deutsches Museum. Our experts are responsible for the restoration of objects, the development and realisation of models and dioramas, the maintenance and redesign of exhibitions as well as repairs and renovation work on the buildings. In this film, we show how the prototype for media binoculars is being developed in our workshops, which can be used in various exhibitions in the future. (German only)
