Old becomes new
Heating construction
The complicated building structure of the Deutsches Museum requires constant work on the heating system.
The city of Munich primarily supplies the museum via its district heating system. Three heating systems supply the heat in the Deutsches Museum. One is located in the library building and supplies the staff offices and part of the workshops, a second in the collection building and a third in the teaching and training seminar, the Kerschensteiner Kolleg.
The heating installers are responsible for the operation, maintenance and conversion of the heating systems. This means that even outside the heating period, in the summer months, they have a lot of work to do: Boilers have to be descaled, the pipework - shut-off valves, insulation, weld seams, seals - have to be checked and replaced if necessary, which can only be done bit by bit given the size of the building (the collections, workshops, depots, etc.).
In the library building, all boilers were removed and replaced by a central boiler (with a capacity of 1300 litres), which led to enormous electricity savings. In addition to the complete refurbishment of the old heating system, the last gas heating system in the Deutsches Museum, which heated the planetarium for decades, is being replaced with a new district heating system.
