This live experiment demonstrates the creation of bioplastic strings made from algae-based materials. Using brown algae, artist Nina Markhardt shows how natural substances can be transformed into biodegradable structures.

Visitors have the chance to witness the full process: from preparing the algae mixture and adding natural pigments, to forming and curing strings. The work reflects on ecological cycles and the interdependence of living systems, inviting visitors to engage with materials that blur the boundaries between nature, waste, and design.
About the artist: Nina Markhardt studied Graphics and Painting at the Academy of Fine Arts Munich. Her work explores the role of fungi and algae across different timelines. Her bioplastic objects and installations represent a sustainable artistic approach and address the interconnectedness of all living beings.

The live experiment is part of the Planetary Health Living Lab curated by Studio Nima, a format exploring innovative solutions at the intersection of human and environmental health. The Planetary Health Living Lab runs for 8 days, 29 June - 6 July 2026 in the Science Communication Lab of Deutsches Museum.
