Epigenetics, quantum computing or the Anthropocene: the Lab is a place to discuss current topics in science and at the same time shows how knowledge is created in research.

What is the Science Communication Lab?

  • Place for the exchange of information on current scientific topics
  • Shows how research is created and communicated
  • Develops and tests new formats of science communication - often in cooperation with scientists
  • Offers space for experiments, small exhibitions, discussions and spontaneous experimentation
  • Location: Auditorium on level -1
  • Opening hours: The SCLab is open for events or can be booked for workshops.

Coming soon to the Science Communication Lab

You can book these offers:

Training course: "Talking about quanta", for max. 20 participants, free of charge. Do you find it a challenge to explain your research topics to friends and parents? Then come to our training course at the Deutsches Museum, which is aimed at young scientists from the research field of quantum technologies or related subjects. It prepares you for dialogue with people with no prior knowledge.

Workshop: "The city in the Anthropocene", approx. 75-90 min for 4-15 participants, also possible as a school class programme, German or English, €80 per group (plus museum admission)
What is the Anthropocene and what should a city in the Anthropocene look like? What challenges does urban planning face between biodiversity loss, climate change, mobility and the economy? Together, the participants will develop a new urban concept.

Workshop: "Science Communication - What? Why? How?", one-day course (or 2x ½ day), digital or on site, for 4-20 participants, German or English, €500 per group (plus museum admission if on site)
The course is aimed at students and scientists from all disciplines and offers a brief introduction to the topic of science communication. It deals with the fundamental question of why, but above all how. The core of the workshop is the development of your own prototype for a science communication format.

Workshop "Science Communication in Museums",(on request)
One to several-day course on science communication in museums. The different areas are identified and analysed, and examples from museum practice are examined and tried out. The second part of the workshop is about developing your own communication format, which will be tested directly in the museum at the end of the course.

Looking for an internship?

The Science Communication Lab offers internships to accompany your studies. You will gain an insight into everyday museum life - both in the exhibitions and in the background - and develop your own project that is embedded in the work of the Science Communication Lab. You are welcome to contribute your own ideas.

About the Science Communication Lab (SCLab)

The Science Communication Lab (SCLab) is an exhibition area in the Deutsches Museum where new forms of science communication are developed and trialled. Current topics and crises - such as climate change or the pandemic - show that science and the public often speak different languages. This is where we try out how research can be communicated in an understandable and accessible way.

The laboratory serves as a platform for a wide range of science communication initiatives - both by the museum itself and by numerous Munich research partners. It is a space for innovative and participatory educational and research formats that promote dialogue between the public and science and provide scientific support.

The focus is usually on small special presentations that are created in collaboration with scientists. This is complemented by activities and hands-on programmes - such as experiments for the Day of the Sea, tests of new demonstration objects or discussions with researchers who are temporary guests at the SCLab.

Current dates and programmes are announced in the calendar - smaller activities sometimes arise spontaneously.
