Workshop: Mycelium Future Building

Fungal mycelium meets 3D printing: Together, we’ll design new shapes and discover how they can be used to create sustainable building components for architecture.

How can mushrooms and 3D printing be used to create building components? In this hands-on workshop, participants will discover fungal materials and ideas for sustainable architecture. Step by step, we’ll move from the raw material to creating our own building component: we’ll explore how to design thin, 3D-printed shapes for architectural elements. Mycelium – the fine network of fungal threads – can grow into these forms and bond with the bio-based 3D print. This creates modular components that demonstrate how construction can be carried out in a more resource-efficient way. The focus is on experimentation, exploring shapes and collaborative design. The workshop is open to all age groups and requires no prior knowledge.

The workshop is part of the Planetary Health Living Lab, curated by Studio Nima, a format showcasing innovative solutions at the intersection of human and environmental health. The Planetary Health Living Lab takes place over eight days, from 29 June to 6 July 2026, at the Science Communication Lab of the Deutsches Museum (Level -1, Hallenbau).
