Immerse yourself in the exciting history of the collection building on the Museumsinsel. During the guided tour with Yannick Hiltscher, Museum Communicator at the Deutsches Museum, you will gain an insight into the history of the creation and development of the world's largest science and technology museum - from the first building designs by Gabriel von Seidl and the opening in 1925 to the present day. Experience how masterpieces of technology were presented in the past and today and what architectural changes the building has undergone over the years.

The history of the Deutsches Museum

"Volksbildung und Volksbelustigung" - "Public education and public amusement" were the cornerstones on which Oskar von Miller based his idea of a technical and scientific museum. At the beginning of the 20th century, the Munich engineer, inventor and energy pioneer gained influential supporters from politics, science and industry. 1903 was the year the museum was founded, and on 7 May 1925 the exhibitions of the Deutsches Museum on the Museumsinsel were opened.

Action weekend 10/11 May, programmes, exhibitions, special tours and digital offers on 100 days around the anniversary of our exhibition building. The Deutsches Museum was opened on Munich's Museumsinsel on 7 May 1925, and in 2025 we will be celebrating its 100th birthday.
