Sea Rescue Day

The German Maritime Search and Rescue Service live at the Deutsches Museum: drills, talks and guided tours aboard the rescue cruiser Theodor Heuss in the museum garden.

The sea rescue team is on its way! Over the weekend of 25 and 26 July, volunteers from the German Maritime Search and Rescue Service (DGzRS) will be on duty on Museum Island. In the event pavilion (either in the museum garden or on the terrace by the Aviation Hall, depending on the weather), you can find out about the DGzRS’s work and organisation, ship models will be on display, and the sea-rescue cruiser “Theodor Heuss” in the Museum Garden will be open for guided tours exclusively on this day. Please note: The ship “Theodor Heuss” is not wheelchair accessible due to narrow, steep stairs.

Sea Rescue Day held in Munich for the first time

The Deutsches Museum is the permanent home to two special exhibits: the former sea-rescue cruiser *Theodor Heuss * and the lifeboat *Asmus Bremer*. On 25 and 26 July, these exhibits will come to life when volunteers from the DGzRS ‘dock’ with us for a whole weekend.

Specialised vessels and real-life operations The sea rescue teams are on duty in the North Sea and the Baltic Sea in all weathers to rescue people in distress at sea. During the two days of events, the volunteers will demonstrate how this work is carried out under extreme conditions. As well as guided tours of the Theodor Heuss, you can look forward to ship models and a behind-the-scenes look at an organisation that has been funded exclusively by donations for over 150 years. Sea Rescue Day takes place every year on the North Sea and Baltic Sea – and for the first time in 2026, it will also be held in Munich
