Your immune system protects you from invaders. So-called regulatory T cells (Treg cells) are a specialized subgroup of immune cells. Acting as ‘guardians’, they suppress the activation of the immune system, when necessary, thereby regulating self-tolerance. In this way, they prevent the development of autoimmune diseases in a healthy organism. In some cases, however, immune cells mistakenly attack harmless substances, leading to allergic reactions, or they fail in their protective function, allowing cancer cells to grow.
Find out how the immune system works and what happens when things go wrong.
There are different activities for children, as well as information for teenagers and adults. Have a go at pipetting, look through a microscope, play games, read our posters and chat with the scientists.
