Scholarship Programme

The Deutsches Museum Archive awards several grants (typically travel grants) to external researchers, provided that their work (such as a Master’s thesis, PhD, habilitation, or publication) requires intensive use of the collections held at the Deutsches Museum Archive. The scheme is primarily aimed at early-career researchers. Funding is also available for short exploratory visits to prepare for larger research projects. Certain grants have specific focal areas (see the details for each individual grant).

History of the Archive

The Deutsches Museum Archive was established in 1903, the very year the museum was founded. The initial statutes, dated 28 December 1903, formally established the archive as an institutional entity. Since then, it has formed an integral part of the museum’s broad concept, which—alongside object collections and exhibitions—encompasses an archive, a library, public lectures, and research. From its inception, the Deutsches Museum as a whole was envisioned—and remains to this day—as an integrated center of scholarship and a hub of technical and scientific culture in Germany.
