Collection profile

The Deutsches Museum’s archive is one of the leading specialist archives on the history of science and technology in Germany and Europe. By focusing on selected areas of science and technology, the archive acquires high-calibre original documents, which are catalogued to the highest standard, conserved and made readily available for use by researchers and the general public (including online, where legally permitted). The collection comprises cultural heritage of national significance to the history of Germany. The work is based on a detailed collection profile.

Scholarship programme

The Deutsches Museum Archive awards several grants (usually travel grants) to external researchers, provided that the subject of their work (Master’s thesis, PhD, habilitation, publication) requires intensive use of the collections held in the Deutsches Museum Archive. The scheme is primarily aimed at early-career researchers. Funding is also available for short fact-finding visits to prepare for a larger research project. Some of the grants have different focuses (see the details for each individual grant).

Publications

The publications from the Deutsches Museum’s archive document individual estates and valuable special topics; some have been published in connection with an exhibition or a project, or in collaboration with other archives:

History of the Archive

The Deutsches Museum’s archive was established in 1903, the very year the museum was founded. The first set of statutes, dated 28 December of the same year, also established the archive as an institutional entity. Since then, it has formed an integral part of the museum’s broad-based concept, which, in addition to exhibitions and collections of objects, also encompasses an archive, a library, a programme of public lectures and research. The Deutsche Museum as a whole was, and has remained since its foundation, conceived as an integrated centre of scholarship and a hub of technical and scientific culture in Germany.
